PRC Racecourse at Tynong Flood Model

Pakenham Racing Club purchased a green field site at Tynong to develop a new racing and training facility. DCE was engaged by the Pakenham Racing Club as principal consultant for the design and construction audit of the new facility for thoroughbred racing, training and ancillary facilities.

The new racecourse site includes approximately 250Ha of former Koo Wee Rup floodplains and adjoins the Ararat Creek. Hydraulic modelling was required in order to demonstrate that the proposed racecourse development and trainers facilities would be above 100 year flood levels, and to ensure that constructed wetlands and growling grass frog ponds would not be adversely impacted by major storm events.

DCE worked alongside Melbourne Water to produce hydrological models using RORB software to represent major storm event flows entering the site. The hydraulic modelling of the site and surrounding floodplains was completed using 2d TUFLOW modelling.

Modelling results confirmed that the proposed development could be protected from flooding and aided the design of major swale drains to direct flows from external catchments around the development.
